The Ultimate Ayurvedic Spa Experience
Have you experienced an Ayurvedic Hot Stone (aka sacred stone) Massage yet? If you haven’t, then you owe yourself this exquisite therapy that will provide you with a sense of tranquility and comfort while re-connecting you with nature. It is a deeply healing and enjoyable treat!
This popular form of massage finds its roots in the ancient science of Ayurveda, and is known as Shila Abhyanga (which basically means "stone massage"). It constitutes a form of swedana, or thermotherapy used to help the Ayurvedic herbal oils penetrate deeply into all your tissues. The rishis (seers) of ancient India used natural tools such as these and integrated them into their herbal therapies to promote healing and longevity.
What Is Ayurvedic Hot Stone Massage?
Ayurvedic Hot Stone Massage involves the use of herbal Ayurvedic oils and water-heated basalt stones of varying sizes to give a slow, deep tissue massage, especially to areas that tend to accumulate tension and stagnation of blood, such as the back, neck and shoulders. The hot stones promote the absorption of oils into the tissues, creating a sensation of comfort and warmth, while the direct heat relaxes muscles and reduces vata dosha, allowing a greater intensity and depth than with a regular massage.
The use of oil and heat is very common in Ayurvedic therapies, precisely because heat promotes the absorption of the oils into the tissues, thus becoming a vehicle to the herbal healing properties and qualities infused in the oils. Plus, the warm stones expand the blood vessels and push blood and unwanted waste products through the body. This has a sedative effect on the nervous system, which promotes healing in and of itself, and it also has a rejuvenating effect on the whole body as it facilitates the cleansing of all systems, particularly the lymphatic system.
Each natural stone radiates heat at various intensities and has a unique textural component that gives it its particular therapeutic qualities, so to speak. In other words, each stone becomes a specific tool because of its shape, texture, and heat absorption. This is why Ayurveda recommends using only naturally tumbled stones, and not those tumbled with machines, which are very popular in spas nowadays.
